Virginia United’s founding principle is to provide an opportunity for girls to develop elite skills in an environment that honors the beauty of the game. VU strives to be a place where excellence is the reward of hard work and focused training; friendship and fun are its natural byproducts. VU wants to continue to field strong teams that are a joy to play on and a pleasure to watch. The ultimate goal is to provide a competitive outlet for a dedicated student-athlete to further develop skills and to prepare to play at the next level if desired.
Richard DeSomma is a Virginia United founder, club director and team coach. He has been a head coach of varsity girls lacrosse programs four years at Westfield High School, nine years at Langley High School, two at Hayfield High School and beginning in the 2016 season until November 2020, coached varsity at Freedom South Riding High School.
In 2019, Coach DeSomma was inducted into the US Lacrosse, Potomac Chapter, Hall of Fame
In 2018 and 2019, Coach DeSomma's Freedom team won the Virginia State Championship. Both years he was awarded the VHSL (Virginia High School League) Coach of the Year, as well as Dulles Region Coach of the Year and Dulles District Coach of the Year.
In 2018, Coach DeSomma was awarded the NFHS (National Federation of State High Schools) National Coach of the Year.
Within Coach DeSomma's first year coaching at Freedom High School, he was awarded Coach of the Year in the Evergreen Conference and Freedom's lacrosse team set three school records. - most consecutive wins (17), first sports team to be undefeated in their regular season (14), and first girls lacrosse Conference Championship.
He was unanimously voted by his peers as Northern Regional Coach of the Year in 2006 and 2010 and was also the Washington Post All-Met Coach of the Year in 2006. Under Coach DeSomma's guidance, Langley was a State Finalist in 2012 and 2013, State Semi-Finalist in 2010, Regional Champion in 2010, District Champions in 2006, 2007, 2010 and was ranked in the Washington Post’s Top 10 in 2006, 2010 and 2012.
As the coach heading the Northern Region team to the Commonwealth Games, his teams garnered 10 gold medals spanning 1999 - 2011.
Coach DeSomma is also the Vice President of the Northern Region Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association and Vice President of the Potomac Chapter of US Lacrosse. He has completed US Lacrosse Level I, II and III coaching clinics as well as Positive Coaching Alliance Workshops, Level I and Double Goal Coach.
